6th Grade Grand Challenge: Providing Access to Clean Water
Introduction:
Access to clean water is one of the greatest engineering challenges of our time. In fact, limited access to clean water is responsible for more deaths worldwide than war. Roughly one out of every six people do not have adequate potable water, and nearly ⅓ of the global population lacks proper sanitation. According to some estimates, nearly 5,000 children die each day from illnesses related to poor sanitation (www.engineeringchallenges.org). Your assignment is to develop a water purification prototype that will address the clean water access problem.
Essential Questions:
Final Capstone Experience:
Students will work in teams to create a Google Slides presentation. In addition, they will design and build a water purification prototype that will best meet the needs of their country’s water problem . The capstone presentation will contain the following:
Team products will demonstrate understanding of focus standards by incorporating evidence in the final capstone experience from each of their core content and applications classes throughout the year.

Your assignment is to develop a water purification prototype that will address the clean water access problem.
Essential Questions:
- Is access to clean water a basic human right?
- Is access to clean water a global issue? Does access to clean water impact people in the United States?
- How does limited/no access to clean water affect daily lives?
- How does limited/no access to clean water impact sanitation?
- How does poor sanitation impact health?
- How does limited/no access to clean water affect a community’s ability to grow and prosper?
- In what ways can communities and governments respond to the clean water crisis?
- What technologies can provide clean water?
Final Capstone Experience:
Students will work in teams to create a Google Slides presentation. In addition, they will design and build a water purification prototype that will best meet the needs of their country’s water problem . The capstone presentation will contain the following:
- Is access to clean water a basic human right?
- Is access to clean water a global issue? Does access to clean water impact people in the United States? What are some water issues impacting Savannah GA?
- Information about the issues surrounding access to clean water (what is the problem and what is causing the problem)
- Historical and current data on the water supply
- Historical and current solutions surrounding access to clean water
- Prototype design addressing the issue of clean water
- Rationale for the effectiveness of prototype
Team products will demonstrate understanding of focus standards by incorporating evidence in the final capstone experience from each of their core content and applications classes throughout the year.
